Study on the diffusion of circular economy solutions

Learning from pioneering SMEs in Switzerland: BURRI was selected to participate in a study by the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) and the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) to provide information on its business models for extending the life cycle of existing products.

Summary of the study

The circular economy shows a way to achieve economic value creation while using fewer resources. However, only around one tenth of companies in Switzerland have adopted a circular economy.

This study is dedicated to the question of how circular economy-based business models can be more widely and rapidly adopted in Switzerland. It examines which factors are crucial for circular economy pioneers to successfully overcome the numerous hurdles in the transition to circular business models. The focus was on the circular economy's particularly environmentally friendly and resource-saving strategies that extend the life of products (sharing, reusing, repairing and refurbishment). Thanks to the survey of successful Swiss circular economy companies and building on the existing scientific literature, eleven success factors were identified.

These factors are illustrated in the report using practical examples and can serve as inspiration for companies that also want to focus on circular business models. The final part of the study provides recommendations on how to promote the diffusion of circular business models in Switzerland.
