Smart lighting solutions for public spaces

Reliable, well-functioning street lighting contributes majorly to the safety of our towns and communities and contributes significantly to the well-being of the population. However, well-maintained candelabras have more than just a functional benefit: In many places, their design language decisively characterises the identity of the town or village.

BURRI manufactures candelabras at the highest Swiss quality since many years and is a trusted and reliable partner for many power plants, ensuring that the populations is always provided functioning street lighting.

Atmospherically illuminating medieval old towns & listed ensembles

A large standard range of different candelabras and luminaires defines our product range. The arched ALLEY candelabra is a very popular choice for historic old towns due to it's nostalgic form. ALLEY is also frequently used in the mountain villages of the Alpine region, as it skillfully blends the weathered chalets and the contemporary hotels

Custom-made luminaires: Customized products in small series

Another option that lighting designers and architects like to use is the development of new luminaires specifically for a location and its requirements in cooperation with the BURRI lighting team: for the medieval town of Aarberg, for example, modern luminaires were developed that not only put the historic old town centre in the limelight, but also have integrated power connections for the traders at the weekly market and suspensions for loudspeakers.

Another service offered by the BURRI lighting department is the reproduction or retrofitting of listed luminaires, such as the refurbishment of the classicist Im Lee Cantonal School by the Pfister brothers in Winterthur.

All luminaires were dismantled, the defective elements were replaced by precise replicas in the BURRI workshop and all the luminaires were retrofitted with modern control systems and LED light sources - while retaining the lighting atmosphere of the historic ensemble from 1927.

RETROfit - life cycle extension for existing luminaires

In many large neighbourhoods built in the 1970s, street and square lighting is no longer state of the art. The striking luminaires often contribute to the identity of the district and are very popular with the population.

In the Rheinacker district in Basel, BURRI was able to dismantle the iconic mushroom luminaires by Louis Poulsen and convert them to LED in the workshop. They were also fitted with modern DALI controls without changing the external appearance of the luminaires. New, taller poles provide larger light beams, while a white paint finish on the inside of the luminaire increases reflection. The lighting atmosphere remains unchanged and the energy-efficient lighting of the neighbourhood is guaranteed for decades to come.

The Lorzenareal Cham also benefited from a complete refurbishment of the existing lighting without having to purchase new luminaires. BURRI's Life Cycle Care team dismantled all the luminaires and disassembled them into their individual parts in the workshop. The defective and partially frosted glass was replaced, the stainless steel components polished and the steel components re-galvanised in painstaking manual work. A technical upgrade to modern lighting components and control systems was carried out before the luminaires were reassembled on site.

Innovative sensors enable energy-efficient lighting on demand

Modern urban neighbourhoods and parks often rely on METRO family luminaires. The light distribution and colour temperature of METRO luminaires can be individually optimised for a wide range of lighting situations and mounting heights. An optional RADAR sensor, integrated almost invisibly into the luminaire, allows the lighting to be controlled as required. The sensor reliably detects whether someone (cars, bicycles or pedestrians) is moving in the street, regardless of the temperature, and only switches on the lighting when this is the case. This leads to a considerable increase in energy efficiency. The robust aluminium housing of the METRO luminaires offers the potential for subsequent retrofitting to extend the life cycle of the luminaires.

Glare protection for dense residential neighbourhoods

The increased density of building and living in our cities also require new concepts for street and square lighting. When a bedroom faces a street or square, unpleasant glare situations occur more and more frequently.

With the YARD luminaire, the light distribution curve can be controlled so precisely that there is hardly any light spill. This not only helps residents to sleep, but also reduces the number of insects attracted by the light from the street light. Unnecessary light pollution of the night sky is also avoided. (Dark Sky)
